Character Certificate Format
Is your employer asking for a character certificate? Don’t be surprised! It is now a usual norm followed by many private and public organizations. Character certificate at the final stage of hiring is more like a mandatory document for many organizations. This certificate is usually asked for in case of bank jobs like clerical jobs, SO and PO jobs etc.
What is a character certificate?
A character certificate is a paper document which is a written declaration about a person’s moral character. Just any XYZ person cannot issue this certificate. Only a gazetted officer has the authority to issue the certificate. However, the officer needs to provide the certificate with a proper official seal and signature that he or she uses everywhere else. Unless the seal and the signature of the gazetted officer is present, the certificate of character is considered invalid and is not accepted by any employer.
Why is this certificate needed?
We will consider both cases of private and public organizations requesting the certificate. Let us start with public organization as this certificate is usually asked for in government jobs and public banking jobs.
When a public organization employs you, you become a person who represents the government. If you do not possess a good moral character, you may actually end up doing things that will not only break civil laws of conduct but at the same time people will lose faith from government. Some activities include embezzlement of money, inappropriate measures take to harm public welfare for the sake of personal benefits (such as offering a particular government contract to an organization of bad repute just because the organization offered extra, off-the-records cash). Getting into a public or government job means that you are becoming a public servant and you should have moral integrity that will drive you to serve the citizens of the country.
Simple! They don’t want a person who may steal money from them or do something that can tarnish their reputation and image in market. Bad reputation eventually translates into monetary loss and in really bad conditions, the company may simply succumb to bankruptcy. No private organization will want that. Well, private organizations who ask for character certificate may also conduct police investigations against you without you or our family members and friends knowing about it.
So the big question: “what is the format of a character certificate?”
Usually there aren’t any dramatic variations in the text written in the certificate. A standard format circulates everywhere and is acceptable as long as the certificate has been used by a gazetted officer with a proper seal and signature.
Usually all gazetted officers keep a copy of the certificate at their home or office and issue it as and when required but if you are not very sure and want to play safe, download the attached character certificate format, take a print out of the blank certificate. Carry it to the officer and ask him or her to issue the certificate on the copy you are providing. Don’t worry! They won’t refuse because it is a standard practice. However, you need to understand that sometimes, gazetted officers may issue the character certificate on their official letter head. If so, he or she may refuse to use the format you provide.
