The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shree Narendra Modi has launched a scheme to provide identity cards for those people who work in unorganized sectors and are not permanent employees of a public or private organization or firm. According to sources in the Labour Ministry, the number of such people working in unorganized sectors touches up to 40 crore. So the central government wants to provide them identity in form of smart cards and will allow them to get access to the government schemes and facilities.
What is a smart card?
A smart card that is soon to be launched by the government for the workers of the unorganized sector is nothing but a unique identity card which carries several data of the owner including an electronic chip that contains all relevant information about that person. These smart cards are to be called UWIN cards. On swapping these cards, the background data of the unorganized worker will come out and they can register themselves in the Govt. social and economic policies without any further paper work.
What are the national schemes that the smart cards will help get registered?
Over the past one and half years, the Modi Govt. has launched several schemes for those sections of the society who do not have a financial independence and job security. Most of them do not have a permanent employment and work on contractual basis. So to get them registered under the pension schemes of the government, life insurance schemes, general insurance scheme and health insurance schemes, the government wants to issue them smart cards that will help them get registered in those schemes easily.
Current working strategy of issue of smart cards
As per reports of the ministry of labour organization, the government has identified nearly 40 crore such workers with no socio – economic identity and independence. So to provide them some assistance from the government’s part, the government has decided to start providing them smart cards or UWIN cards. This project is to be carried out under different phases. In the first phase, 10 crore cards are to be issued. The Govt. has stated that it will take nearly 2 years for the completion of the project.
