In this article we are providing details on how to check and get universal account number UAN Status online. Provident fund portability service or EPF portability has started and the Universal Account Numbers have been allotted to the EPF account holders. For managing your EPF account, you just need to know your Universal Account Number (UAN). If you want the UAN you can go the HR of your employer. However, even before you get in touch with HR, you can know the status of Universal Account Number (UAN) online on the website managed by EPFO.
Steps to get and check universal account number UAN Online
Go the new website by EPFO for UAN
EPFO has launched a separate website altogether to check the status of Universal Account Number (UAN) and to manage your EPF portability online. In fact, there are two separate websites for the employees (EPF members) and employers for this service.
Go to the URL which is for EPF members which means the individual and is http://uanmembers.epfoservices.in/ to check Universal Account Number (UAN) online as part of EPF Portability
Other URL for employers is https://employerclaims.epfoservices.in/ and can be used by employers to provide the UAN number online.
You (EPF member) can also go to the main website of EPFO (http://www.epfindia.gov.in/index.html) and find the above links which is http://uanmembers.epfoservices.in/ on the homepage. Once you go to the link you need to follow the below step.
Click on the “Know your UAN Status” link
You will find this link under “Welcome Members” in red text at the top of the page on the left hand side. You will not have difficulty locating this link to check your UAN status online as it is pretty prominent and stands out with a grey background.

This page will also open in the new window titled “Check UAN Status” once you use the link http://uanmembers.epfoservices.in/check_uan_status.php Here you will need to enter the PF number along with other important details. Make sure that the correct details are keyed in to get the correct information. Following fields need to be filled:
Select State: You will need to choose the name of the state from the drop down where your office is registered. While your office may have branches in other states and you may be working in the state different from the state where the office is registered but your PF number is allocated according to the latter. If you are not sure about the state, you can figure it out from the first two letters of the PF number. For instance, if the PF number starts with GN, you will need to select Haryana; similarly you will select DS for Delhi.
Select Office: This is the field where you will select the office region. For instance, if you have chosen Haryana as the state, you will find 4 regions to choose from. Different states have different number of regions. If you are not sure about the region, you can check the next three letters of the PF number. For instance, if the state is Haryana and the next three letters say GGN, it means your region is Gurgaon.
PF Account no:
Note: Once you choose the state and office the first two text boxes of this field will get populated automatically. Verify if it is the same as your PF number. If not, you may need to select a different state or office.
The third text box under this field is for the Establishment Code or Organization number. This code is common to all the employees of the organization. This code is the first set of digits in the PF number and can be as long as 7 digits.
The next text box labeled as Ext is for the extension number. It is mostly 000. If it is different, it will be there in your PF number. If it is not in the PF number, you can leave this box blank.
The last text box is A/c No (account number), which identifies you as the EPF account holder. It is unique to you and can be as long as 7 digits.

Once you click on Check Status, the site will tell you whether the Universal Account Number (UAN) as part of EPF Portability has been allotted to you. However, even if the number has been allotted, you will need to get it from your Employer. The site will not display your actual account number i.e. UAN and can only be provided by employers. This seems to be one of the drawback but still it is a very good step by the new government.
