List of Purple cap winners all IPL season (2008-2017)
Indian Premier League is one the biggest events in India that takes place every year. It was started in 2008 and this year it completed its 9 successful seasons. IPL is said to be the most glamorous cricket ground ever where the superb cricketers represent a city not the country. Purple Cap is one of the awards given in the IPL matches. The award is for the bowlers who take most wickets in a single season or in a single match. At the end of the series the most wicket takers will get the Purple Cap trophy. In 2008, after introduction of the Orange Cap, Purple Cap was introduced within a week by the then Chairman Mr. Lalit Modi.
What is Purple Cap?
Purple Cap is an honour given to that bowler who will take most wickets in one match. The bowler will wear the cap during the match while fielding. After completion of the entire season the bowler with highest numbers of wickets will get the award. If there is a tie between two bowlers then the one with highest economy rate will win the trophy.
Winner of 2008
The first winner of the purple cap is Sohail Tanvir. This left arm Pakistani bowler got 22 wickets in 11 matches. He was playing for the team Rajasthan Royals who had won the first season of the IPL. Unfortunately after the Mumbai terrorist attack 26/11, the Pakistani cricketers were suspended or banned from the IPL match.
Winner of 2009
The left arm fast-medium bowler from the team Deccan Chargers, R. P. Singh was the man who won the purple cap in 2009. The bowler took 23 total wickets in 16 matches. The team DC had won the 2nd season which was held in South Africa in the year 2009.
Winner of 2010
Again in 2010 it was a player from Deccan Chargers who won the purple cap for grabbing most wickets in the entire season. Pragyan Ojha, the left arm slow bowler took 21 wickets in 16 matches. He used to play for the Bengal cricket team before IPL happened to him. He made a good way to the Indian Cricket Team with his brilliant performance in 2010.
Winner of 2011
The Sri Lankan tiger Lasith Malinga was the man who won the purple cap in 2011. Lasith played for Mumbai Indians under the captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar in 2011 IPL season. He took 28 wickets in 16 matches. He is a fast bowler and has the unique round arm style of bowling. Though Mumbai could not reach the finals but Malinga did grab the award.
Winner of 2012
The South African right arm fast bowler, Morne Morkel had won the IPL season-5 purple cap award. He had got 25 wickets after playing 16 matches. Morkel was playing for the Delhi daredevils’ team. In this year the Kolkata team won the finals.
Winner of 2013
Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies player won purple cap award in the year 2013. He was playing for the team Chennai Super Kings under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Though the team lost the finals against Mumbai Indians but Bravo had got the highest numbers of wickets till now in this season. He played 18 matches and grabbed 32 wickets which is till date the highest numbers of wickets in IPL.
Winner of 2014
The Indian bowler Mohit Sharma was the winner of purple cap in 2014. Sharma is a right arm medium fast bowler who played for Chennai Super Kings in the year 2014 when he grabbed 23 wickets in 16 matches. CSK could not make it the finals but Sharma took the award away.
Winner of 2015
Again it was Dwayne Bravo from Chennai Super Kings who won the purple cap award by taking maximum numbers of wickets in this IPL season. Though he could not break his own record of 32 wickets but he made it to 24 this time by playing 16 matches in total. His team failed to get the final trophy against Mumbai Indians.
Winner of 2016
This year the talented and young bowler from Hyderabad, Bhuvaneswar Kumar won the title by taking 23 wickets in 17 matches. His team Sun Risers Hyderabad won the finals against Royal Challengers Bangalore this year and became the champions. Bhuvaneswar, commonly known as Bhuvi had won the best bowler of the series.
