List of IPL Winners and runners up all Seasons and Captains (2008-2017)
IPL 9 (2016)
When Royal Challengers (RCB) faced off Sunrisers Hyderabad (SH) on Sunday in the IPL 2016 Final, majority of cricket lovers were expecting them to win easily. It was because they had arguably the best batting lineup in the league. Given below is a comparison of both teams:
|Batsmen||Virat Kohli (captain)||David Warner (captain)|
|AB de Villiers||Shikhar Dhawan|
|KL Rahul (wicketkeeper batsmen)||Naman Ojha (wicketkeeper batsmen)|
|Bowlers||Chris Jordan||Bhuvneshwar Kumar|
|Yuzvendra Chahal||Mustafizur Rahman|
|Sreenath Aravind||Barinder Sran|
|All-rounders||Shane Watson||Moises Henriques|
|Stuart Binny||Yuvraj Singh|
|Chris Gayle||Bipul Sharma|
|Iqbal Abdulla||Deepak Hooda|
You can see why RCB was the obvious pick of choice. However, the obvious was soon turned on to its head. Let’s see how it unfolded:
Despite RCB’s proven chasing record David Warner decided to bat first after winning the toss. He had his own plans in mind, and they became visible when he and Shikhar Dhawan gave a lightening start to the team. Hitting 69 runs in 38 balls, Warner rang the warning bell for RCB as he took the score to 120 by 13th over.
The ‘Cutting’ Edge
After 13th over when wickets started falling one after another, for a moment it looked as if RCB had turned things around. However, an unexpected round of boundaries from Ben Cutting took the score of Sunrisers to 208.
Great Beginning (For the Favorites)…
In turn RCB did what it was expected to do, but with an unexpected twist. The bat of Chris Gayle, which had been silent for whole season, finally spoke up as he shot 76 runs off 38 balls. Kohli also continued his form with 54 runs off 35 balls.
But Those Yorkers…
However, things took an ugly turn (for Challengers) when Kohli and Villiers returned to pavilion after Gayle. Bhuvneshwar and Mustafizur continued their yorkers in inch-perfect styles. When even De Villiers hadn’t been able to stick in front of them, how could the lower-order? As a result, Challengers couldn’t have the crown for third time.
IPL 8 (2015)
It was a cracker of a contest in Eden gardens in Kolkata and Mumbai Indians won IPL Season 8 (2015) beating Chennai Super Kings. This the second time in 3 years that Rohit Sharmas Mumbai Indian have defeated Chennai Super kings in the same ground to lift the trophy. Rohit Sharma become Man of the Match in the IPL 8 Final and Andre Russell of Kolkata was awarded Man of the Series.
While IPL season 8 is towards its business end and only 3 teams are left which can hold this coveted trophy. IPL Season 8 has been the toughest IPL contest and it was the last match which had decided which team would qualify for the final playoffs
Mumbai India was in 6th Position before the start of the last league match of IPL and their win had put them on the second position. This shows how competitive this season was. Mumbai are now in Finals beating CSK.
