Kanivu Scheme kerala
The state government of Kerala has recently launched a special scheme for the welfare of those citizens who are not mentally sound and are bedridden. This scheme is termed as ‘Kanivu’ by the government. It is being launched in the in annual budget session of Kerala which was held in Thiruvananthapuram on 12th Feb, 2016. This is a social welfare scheme dedicated to stand by the mentally ill and bedridden patients across the state by providing them necessary aid and support. This Kanivu scheme is being launched by none other than the Chief Minister of the state, himself in the budget session.
What the beneficiaries will get under the Kanivu scheme?
For eligibility for the Kanivu scheme, the mentally unstable citizen must be resident of the state of Kerala and must be bedridden. The state govt. will provide food, shelter, treatment and necessary care for these bedridden mentally ill patients of the state. This scheme will bring added support for better treatment and rehabilitation for those mentally disturbed citizen of Kerala. There will be dedicated government social workers assisting the Kanivu members with the service. This year also, the state govt. has shown its dedication towards its promise to improvise the health care infrastructure by launching this unique scheme.
Kanivu Scheme functionality
The Kanivu scheme will function through the Kudumbashree centers all across the state. And, the main administration will be the Health department of the Govt. of Kerala. The members of the public welfare workers body – Asha will be performing the task of looking after the Kanivu members. Those Asha members will also be given a separate monthly stipend of Rs. 1,000 for lending their service in this scheme. They will help the patients get proper medical attention, get medication and feeding of the bedridden patients.
Budget allocated under the Kanivu scheme
The state govt. has never shown negligence in matters of health care for its citizens. In the past years also, the betterment of the public health standards and solving the problems has been a priority for the state govt. total of more than one thousand crore has been allocated for various health schemes in the state in this annual budget. The Kanivu scheme has fetched Rs. 100 crore. Following is the breakdown of the budget allocate for the health care system in the state of Kerala:

Steps taken for reducing the medicine costs
The state govt. has also decided to reduce the prices of the medicines so that poor and economic weaker sections can also afford it. The government had earlier set up Govt. run pharmacies named the Nithi and Karunya, where medicines were being given at subsidized rates. So the Govt. has decided to cut the service and customs taxes on the medicines in these pharmacies.
