Indian railway is said to be the biggest public sector in the country. Almost every year nearly 20,000 people are being recruited in different posts. Currently under 9 major posts, there are 18,000 vacancies in Indian Railway. One of the major posts among these 9 is Traffic Apprentice. According to the Railway recruitment notice of this year 2016, there are near about 1645 Traffic Apprentice vacancies in Indian Railway this year.
What is Traffic Apprentice?
Traffic Apprentices are the people who track the train lines, timings and movements. These apprentices are generally posted in the operations department of the Indian Railway. Traffic Apprentices are said to be the most skilled supervisors who take care of usage of resources like locomotives, tracks, signals and other available resources and requirements to smooth the progress of railway functions.
Out of all, 25% of the posts of Station master, Yard masters, section controllers and Traffic inspectors are being recruited as Traffic Apprentices. The job profile of these officers are definitely stressful as they keep monitoring the train movements and need to be swift in taking decisions in case of emergency.
Job profile of the Traffic Apprentices
As said, the TAs handles the movement and smooth functioning of the trains. They keep on monitoring the timing, signals, locomotives, tracks and other required things that are needed to make the function of railways to be hassle free. In case of emergency, TAs need to chart the trains, locations, signals and others in a proper way so that help of rescue can be reached smoothly. The job is definitely stressful for a person and it needs a 2 years long training.
Qualifications needed to become a TA
To appear for the exam of becoming a traffic Apprentice, one needs to be graduate from a recognised university. Having a diploma in Railway management and transport, railway economy, multimodal transport and such certified by the Railway Bhawan, New Delhi will be an additional benefit for the applicant.
Traffic Apprentice Selection process
The selection process is easy. Applicants needs to appear and clear the written examination followed by the document verifications. Once all these procedures are done successfully, the applicant can join the 2 years training program. After successfully completion of the training, applicants can join the railway board as Station master, Yard master, section controller or traffic inspector.
- Applicants need to appear for the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination in the traffic department. The highest age limit for appearing for the examination is 40 years. The minimum age is 21 as the exam needs minimum graduation degree.
- 15% of the total seats are reserved and the recruitment takes place here through direct recruitment by the Railway Recruitment Board.
Career Opportunity – Promotion
After successfully completion of the training applicants will be joined the board as Traffic Inspectors, Section Controllers, Station Masters and Yard masters. Later on after serving for several years, TAs can be elevated to higher posts like chief controllers, Deputy Station superintended or supervisors and such.
They can even grow more in their positions and reach to the higher administrative positions like Operation managers, Assistant operation managers in divisional basis and such.
Pay Scale of the TA
The basic pay scale for a TA is ranging from Rs. 9300 to Rs. 34, 800/- which is definitely more than a chartered accountant. The grade pay for these officers is Rs. 4200/-, so as a whole the total initial salary of the Traffic Apprentice is Rs. 13, 500/- per month. It is expected that after 7th pay commission the pay scale for Traffic Apprentice could be raised up to 36,000/- per month. At times Traffic Apprentices are required to ravel from one spot to another. All the related expenses are borne by the Railway department.
According to the new pension scheme by the Indian Government, 10% of the total salary is been deducted from their salary. During training period, TAs will not get any Running Allowances. There are other allowances included with the Pay Scale such as DA, Transport Allowances and house rent allowances. This house rent allowances are paid to those who don’t get quarter facility for the railway boards.
