The Mumbai team of Indian Premier League, named Mumbai Indians is ready to put up a rocking show in the next IPL season 9. The Mumbai Indians has played all eight IPLs so far and have won two IPL titles in 2013 and 2015. It has also a Champions League title under its belt. Considered one of the biggest forces of IPL, Mumbai Indians will go all guns blazing this year also and is expected to give tough competition to the other IPL teams.

There will be 7 home matches to be played against each team by the Mumbai Indians. The home ground of Mumbai Indians is the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. This year’s final match will also supposed to be held in Wandhede Stadium as Mumbai won the last year’s championship and in the IPL history, the final match is always played in the home ground of the defending champions. Wankhede has a seating capacity of more than 33 thousand spectators. It had a recent addition of a new section called Sachin Tendulkar Stand.

The Mumbai Indians is owned by the Reliance Industries and managed by Neeta Ambani, who is the wife of the Reliance Industries owner Mukesh Ambani. There are no other stake holders in this team, as seen in case of other IPL teams where there are generally 3 or 4 stake holders. In early January, BCCI sold the IPL teams and the Mumbai team was sold for the highest bid. It was sold for a record 111.9 million USD and thus became the most costly team in IPL. The contract between BCCI and Ambanis is for 10 years.
Initial days of struggle of Mumbai Indians in the IPL History
IPL started its course from 2008 and Mumbai Indians is one of the teams that is playing right from the beginning of this extravagant cricket league. The first two years i.e. 2008 and 2009 were somehow forgettable for the boys in blue and gold. They did not even qualify for the playoffs and were eliminated in the league stage only. After that things turned in their favor and in 2010, they were the runners up. After 2010, the Mumbai Indians never got eliminated from the league stage.

After two years of struggle, finaly the Mumbai Indians started to put a mark in the league. In 2019, they were placed in the 2nd position and hence also qualified for the Champions League T20. After that after two seasons, the Mumbai Indians won its first IPL trophy under the captaincy of Indian star batsman Rohit Sharma. He was purchased for a record 115 million USD. They defeated the CSK in the final held in Chennai. After that in 2015 also they became the champions for the second time by the defeating the same Chennai team.

Mumbai is confident of defending their title this year. They are not keen to bring much changes to the winning squad they had last year. The IPL committee allowed to retain the players from the last year, for this year’s IPL. The Mumbai Indians have confidently retained their 19 players which include 13 Indian Players and rest 6 oversees players. The remaining players will be purchased in the VIVO IPL 9 auction which will be held on 6th Feb, 2016, in Bangalore. Ex Australian captain, Ricky Ponting is the coach and Indian star batsman Rohit Sharma will continue to be the captain for the Mumbai Indians. Batting maestro Sachin R. Tendulkar has also promised to play the role of mentor for the Mumbai team in this year’s IPL also.

He has scored 1751 runs in IPL till now with a good strike rate of 148.52 and also took 56 wickets so far. Next is Sri Lankan pace bowler Lasith Malinga, most popular for his trademark style of bowling, has taken 143 IPL wickets. Lendl Simmons is in the side for last two seasons and has scored 934 runs in 21 matches so far. Marchant de Lange, South Africa’s fast bowler has so far taken only 5 wickets from 5 matches played so far in IPL. Corey Anderson of New Zealand is an all rounder and Mitchell McClenaghan of the same county is a medium pacer with 18 wickets from 12 matches.

Indian star batsman Rohit Sharma is wearing the captain’s cap from 2013 when Rickey Ponting stepped down from the job. That year only, the Mumbai side won its first IPL trophy beating CSK. Rohit Sharma was one of the most extravagant purchase in the history of IPL. The Mumbai Indians bought this right hand batsman for record 115 million USD. Earlier he used to play for the Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad, which is no more. He has so far played 128 IPL matches from which 83 is played in the Mumbai jersey. He has scored 3,385 runs in his IPL career with a strike rate of 131.56. This includes one century and 24 half centuries.
