Initiatives by the government for Women Empowerment
After the new government, there have been many initiatives taken up in the past twenty months for the upliftment of women and children in the country. These initiatives will be useful for the welfare of women and children. WCD Minister, Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi claimed during a function that was also an initiative for the development of Women and Child by the Development Ministry in Jaipur that there are few initiative taken up by the government. Some such steps include One Stop Centres where women who are being violated can reach out to, enactment of Juvenile Justice Act 2015 and launch of portals like Khoya Paya for missing children. Moreover, 33% of the police force will also be reserved for the women. Special police Volunteers and schemes of Gender Champions are also some of the initiatives.
Another big launch of the year that has been an initiative by the prime minister of India is Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has launched this great initiative. The basic objective of this scheme is to create equality in the child sex ratio and it is implemented in 100 district across the nation. Further, after the tremendous results of the scheme, 61 more districts are also covered. There will be performance report also that will be shared soon by the government.
20 one stop centers named as Sakhi were also launched in July last year. This scheme is an initiative for women help and ten of which are already operational. According to the minister 660 more such centres will be set up soon. The reservations for women is already being practiced in 7 big states and Union Territories. In the rest of the states, it will be implemented soon and this initiative will surely help to curb crime. This will increase the power for the women and give them a better place in the society.
All the new cell phone to be launched in the market will also come with a panic button for the safety of women and all the old phones will also be enabled with this feature, the minister added.
A MOU is also signed by WCD Ministry with Railways for tracking all the missing and kidnapped children. This initiative will help to rehabilitee these children who are either runaway or kidnapped. Posters of these children will be put up on coaches and help kiosks are also being set up at the railway stations.
The railway staff is also trained to tackle such issues. There is also a web portal that has been launched by the Prime Minister named as Khoya Paya. Through this advanced initiative, information can be easily made accessible so that missing children can be located faster. A child line has also been operational in 386 cities and further will cover 500 cities and towns.
The government’s next step is to work towards improving the nutrition levels of the children in India. It is very important for children to get good balanced diet and healthy diet for growing. The Junk Food Guidelines have also been regulated according to scientific researches. Extending maternity leave, reforming matrimonial websites, Handbook on Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, mandatory appointment of a Woman Director on Board by all Companies, Women’s Welfare Committees in all districts etc. are also some vigilant and appreciable steps taken up for empowerment of women in the society.
A large facility will also be formed in Vrindavan for more than 1000 widows and it will give place for them to stay and work. They will also get useful trainings there, the minister said. The construction has also commenced and will finish by the end of the year. The Women Sarpachs will also be trained for effective leadership of women. This will help the villages to grow in every possible aspect and the women can add to it.
The minister inaugurated a photo exhibition at the same venue which portrayed the new initiatives of the government. The conference stated and she addressed the audience with the briefings. The event was organized by DAVP. The conference was held for two days and was hosted by Press Information Bureau and nine Union Ministers. Editors, Bureau Chiefs and Senior Correspondents representing Regional Media were present to grace the occasion. They had come from all parts of the country.
