.Then his love affair with Google started in 2004, April 1 when Google launched Gmail. He was hired but not for Gmail but for the Google Search Bars that were designed for top browsers of that time like Firefox and Internet Explorer.
It was SundarPichai who came up with the idea of Google’s own browser called Google Chrome. Eric Schmidt – the then CEO of Google thought of it as a pointless distraction but eventually Chrome launched, thanks to Pichai’s efforts and today, it remains the most used browser in entire world except India, almost entire Africa, Japan and Germany.
That’s it! Pichai was now put in charge of Chrome OS and Chromebook – a type of concept that Silicon Valley conceptualized but never realized! Pichai made it reality for Google and today 1/4th of all PCs sold worldwide are Chromebooks.
Now he was given the responsibility for the launch of Chrome OS and Google Drive management along with the management of Google Maps and Gmail. While all this was happening, he married his childhood sweetheart name Anjali, fathered two kids and became Jive Software’s director.
In 2013, Andy Rubin, head of Android resigned from Google after having some clash with Larry Page. Page had no second thought about who would replace Rubin. The choice was obvious. SundarPichai was put in that position. During Rubin’s leadership, it was Pichai, who pitched for replacing Android Browser that Rubin was developing with Google Chrome. To get Chrome in Android, Pichai had to agree to sign a term sheet with Andy. You know what a term sheet is? It’s a document that usually Venture Capitals sign with their new startups!
