EPFO Launches Mobile Services and Mobile App
It appears to be a golden age of digitization in India. With every service we can think of going online, EPFO eventually took the quantum leap. Yes, from traditional paper format EPFO first took the leap by taking services online and now, the organization has taken another leap to add mobility to its services. Now pension holders and provident fund holders can literally check their accounts according to their whims and wishes even when they are on the move.
With newly introduced Mobile Services and Mobile App, EPFO intends to serve its list of 3.54 crore provident fund subscribers, 49.22 lakh pension holders and its very own 6.1 lakh employees who too are either provident fund subscribers or pension holders. So, what new services have been added? How do they work? Let us find out. Be patient. This article will be slightly long. You can actually jump sections and check out the ones that you want.

What is EPFO Missed Call service?
The Missed Call service which falls under the spectrum of Mobile Services is all about giving a Missed Call to EPFO provided number. This number is 01122901406. This service works only for mobile phones. Landlines cannot be used for this service. Also, the mobile number has to be UAN number. Once a missed call is given, all details of the person will be sent as an SMS to the UAN number. This is particularly helpful for those who do not possess a Smartphone.
What is UAN Activation with SMS?
Those who do not have their mobile phones registered and activated with UAN, he or she can easily do so. All it requires is sending an SMS to 77382-99899. Users need to send the SMS in the following format:

So, if you wish to use Marathi, you should send the following SMS: EPFOHO UANMAR to 7738299899.
Once you send this SMS, your mobile number will be registered with UAN and activated. Once the number is activated, EPFO will send all necessary details along with PF balance, last contribution amount and seeded KYC details.
UAN registered mobile numbers will also get alerts on passbook, credit alerts etc.
What is EPFO Mobile Application?
Here we are taking about a mobile application which can work only and only with smartphones. This app is known EPFO m-sewa. The app has been developed for Android phones and hence, only Android users will be able to use this app. iPhone or Windows Phone users will not have access to this service.
Unfortunately, the app cannot be downloaded through Google Play interface. There is a separate APK file which has to be downloaded through this link. Save the downloaded file to your phone’s MicroSD card. Now go to your phone settings and look for the option which reads ‘Security’. Tap on it to open the options available under Security. There scroll down and towards the bottom you will find an option which reads: “Allow Installation of apps from unknown sources”. Tap on this option to turn it on.
Now go to your File Commander and browser through your MicroSD card data. Find the downloaded APK and tap on it. It will begin installation. Installation should be complete within a few seconds.
Once you have installed the Mobile Application, tap on the icon on the Home screen of your mobile phone to start the app. The app’s homepage should three options:
- Member (which is essentially referring to Employee of any organization).
In case you are a EPFO Member
Tap on ‘Member’ option. On the next page, you will be asked to activate UAN number for your device or check Balance or Passbook. You need to select the UAN Activation option. It will ask for several details which include:
- Establishment Code – this is the first field.
- Extension – this is the second field.
- Employee Number – this is the third field.
- UAN (Universal Account Number) – this is the fourth field.
- Mobile Number – this is the fifth field.
- Declaration – this is the sixth field. There is nothing to fill up here. You need to tap on the small box so that a tick mark appears.
Once you provide all the necessary information and tap on the Declaration field, finally tap on the Activate button.
You need to have your UAN number. In case you have not yet registered for UAN, you can do so through this link. On this page, the registration form is hidden. Click on the small tick box that you see on the page and the form should show up. Complete the registration and wait for UAN registration. This is going to take time (several days). Wait out the period but periodically check your UAN application status through this link.
What happens when your UAN Activation for your mobile app is completed?
Now fire up the app. On the homepage of the app, select Member. Once you tap on Member you will be taken to the next page where you will be asked to tap on UAN Activation or Balance/Passbook option. Tap on the Balance/Passbook option. Then provide your UAN number and your mobile number and tap on ‘Show’ button. A few details will show up and at the bottom you will see a button which reads, ‘View Passbook’. Tap on it and your Passbook will be displayed.
In case you are a Pensioner
If you are a pensioner, you can check the details of pension disbursal using this mobile app. Checking the details is simple process. Start on the homepage of app and tap on Pensioner. You will see a small form wherein you need insert the PPO number in the first field and birth date in the second field and then tap on the Submit button. The app will connect with the server and pull out the details.
In case you are an employer
In case you are an employer, you can quickly check the remittances or EPF deposits made by the company for its employees. In order to check the details, start at the homepage of the app and tap of the last option which reads Employer. On the next page provide the TRRN number, which is a 13-digit number and tap on Show Status button. The details will be pulled out and shown on the screen.
So, using the app is actually better because of detailed information that it shows. However, those without smartphone can always revert back to Missed Call or SMS services offered by EPFO.
