E Sahyog Launched by Income Tax Department in Accordance with Government’s Digital India initiative
With the launch of the pilot project ‘e-sahyog’ by the Income Tax Department of India, the tax payers will find their lives a bit easier, as the project aims to lessen the compliance cost for the tax payers. The project will provide an online means for resolving those tax assessments where there is a disparity in the income tax returns. The government will now provide paperless services to the assesses to inform them about the discrepancy in their income tax returns. This will greatly reduce the requirement for assesses to appear before the authorities in case their income tax returns has been selected for inspection.
This move from the income tax department is in accordance with the Digital India Initiative, which aims at the growth of the online infrastructure of the government bodies and enhanced internet connectivity to ensure that the citizens of India can avail these government services online. This income tax department initiative was launched by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
In a recent meeting of the Prime Minister, the digital India initiative got a lot of praise from the Apple CEO. Now Oracle has also announced its support to this initiative of the Indian government.
This is one of the efforts to make sure that the government entities like income tax department can make their services available to the citizens of India in the electronic form. Under this pilot project the income tax department will now provide the information of any returns discrepancy to the assesses with the help of emails and SMSs. An online e-filing portal is also launched which will allow the tax payer to view all the information which is related to the income tax return discrepancy on the portal. The tax payers will also be able to post their own responses on the subject of discrepancy to the income tax authorities through this portal.
Once the response is submitted by the tax payer, it will be checked by predesigned automated closure rules. If the response and other information are deemed suitable by the automated closure rules, the income tax mismatch issue will be considered as closed. This will ensure that the tax payers are not required to be present physically in front of the authorities for resolving these issues. To check the information related to the return mismatch and closure status, the tax payer will simply have to log in to the e-filing portal.
In another move to ensure that people can get the easy access to the public services, the Finance Minister has also launched PAN card camps in those area of the country, where the access of these services are still limited. The campaign aims at setting up PAN card camps at the isolated parts of the country to ensure a high PAN card coverage of all the citizens of India. 43 remote locations have been selected for these two days PAN card camps which include the rural and semi urban areas. As of now there are only around twenty three crore population, holding the PAN card. This number is critically low, when compared to around 92 core people having Aadhar cards. To facilitate the PAN card issue, a number of these camps will be held throughout the year in other remote parts of the country.
In the recent budget, the finance minister has announced that for any transaction that is more than 1 lakh of rupees, the PAN card will be mandatory. However, the issue that not everyone in the country have PAN card was raised. To ensure that all the citizen of the country get their PAN cards, these PAN card camps are launched.
