CRV Sagar Purvi | Analysis of ocean parameters
In order to study and analysis of ocean parameters along the coastal waters of India, the government of India has recently positioned Coastal Research Vessel Sagar Purvi.
This research vessel is a part of the fleet of four Oceanographic research vessels that the Department of Ocean Development owns. CRV Sagar Purvi has been deployed for various purposes of Ministry of Earth Sciences. This research vessel positioned in order to monitor the Management of coastal resources including coral reef and marine pollution levels by annexing with the existing Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction System (COMAPS) Program. The vessel is also involved in Integrated Coastal and Marine Area Management and in the Swathe bathymetry survey of Exclusive Economic Zone of India.
How will Sagar Purvi be useful?
Sagar Purvi has been deployed so that the ocean waters around India can be studied. So data collected by CRV Sagar Purvi will be used in understanding biological wealth and conservation of coastal resources, to understand the marine pollution levels, and to study the seabed morphological features and its geo-morphological implications.
As a part of the COMPAS program the water quality parameters are checked periodically in the sensitive coastal marine areas in India. The main focus here is to check for oil spills, so that the quality of the sea water can be maintained.
Apart from this the swathe bathymetry survey charts used by Sagar Purvi will act as
- A base map for communication purpose
- Oceanographic researchers and defense
- Navigation sectors
The vessel has been designed by National Ship Design Research Centre, Vizag, for the purpose of oceanographic work. It is perfect for such ocean research work and has specifications such as length of 30 m and a low draft of 1.8m. Also it accommodates around six scientists onboard with fully air conditioned and laboratories as well.
