Exhibition on the “Coin and Currency of India”
The exhibition on the coins of INR and the Indian currency was held on 22nd Feb, 2016 by the Finance Ministry of India. The main speaker of the exhibition was none other than the Finance Minister of India, Shree Arun Jaitley. The Great Hall was selected as the venue for this exhibition on the Indian currency. This was the first time such a big scale exhibition is being held on the evolution of the Indian currency and it was held in the historic auditorium hall.
What was the main of holding the exhibition?
The exhibition on the detailed study and historical analysis of the coins used in the Indian history and the currency notes used so far was held in the Great Hall. The main aim of holding such an exhibition was to get accustomed with the evolution theory of the coins and the notes that were used in India, right from the early ages of History. Samples of old specimens were kept on display. How the use of Indian money has been changed over the time, right from the time of using clay coins to the use of electronic money or simply e-money.
The historical Great Hall was also an area of interest
The exhibition was held in the historically acclaimed Great Hall which is located right in the north block. Though the main objective of holding such an exhibition was the study the science behind the history of currency evolution in India, but the exhibition also glorified the importance and beauty of the Great Hall. Generally, this hall is never used for any important activities and is always served as a passage for the office employees. But on the exhibition day, the glory of this hall returned and some little history on the hall itself was presented. The finance minister declared that the hall will be used in future also in holding important meetings and programs.
Book presentations in the exhibition of the currency and coins of Indian money
There were two book presentations held in this Great hall exhibition on the same day. The writers and co writers of both the books were present there and they gifted the specimen copies of their books to the Shree Arun Jaitley. This act of presenting these significant books to the finance minister, glorified the exhibition even more

Mission of Swatch Bharat linked with this exhibition
The Finance Secretary also mentioned that the held program was also a part of Pradhan Mantri’s Swatchh Bharat Aviyan as holding similar programs frequently in the office corridors will help in keeping the office and its surroundings clean. Earlier in the past, this kind of exhibitions was used to hold in the auditoriums or some other halls. But this time, a daily used hall which is used as passage by the employees of the Home Affairs Dept. and the Finance Dept., called the Great Hall was used. So stress was also given to use it further and to glorify the history and beauty of the Great hall.
What ‘Money’ has contributed till now?
Money has always played a very important role in bringing some economic and political transformations in the history of mankind. So in the history of India also, money has changed several paths and took many forms. Through this exhibition, the department of finance wanted to make people aware of the history of the money in India and how it changed from one form to another. The people were made aware of the hidden facts behind some historical occurrences in the coinage of Indian culture and history. Encouragement on preservation of old forms of currency was also done by the speakers.
