Bahubali vs Bajrangi Bhaijaan Box Office Collection
2015 has been a record-breaking year for Indian cinema as a whole. Two megahit movies – Bahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan are competing against each other in the box office collection race. Both these movies are on the verge of creating new records for Indian cinema.
When compared head-on, Bajrangi Bhaijaan has some obvious advantages over Bahubali, which are acting as catalysts in both domestic and international markets. However, Bahubali has also entered market with its fair share of advantages too, which has helped it to make history that will possibly be envied by regional filmmakers for decades to follow. Let us take a quick look at each movie with its advantages and disadvantages to understand the factors that are helping them with their massive box office hauls. In the process, we will also learn about their cutthroat competition.
Bahubali: Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, this epic historical fiction titled Bāhubali: The Beginning, stars Prabhas and Rana Daggubati. The movie benefited from its huge budget. It is The Most expensive movie ever produced in Indian cinema and features stunning visuals. The success formula for this epic movie was simple: a fusion of mythology and stunning visuals.
The creation of mythical kingdoms, thrilling chases on icy slopes, amazing fight scenes on mountain peaks and a grand-finale with a war sequence lasting 40 minutes are some of the major factors that helped the movie to break box office records. Of course, the openly touted budget and the world’s largest poster measuring 51,000 sq. ft. did have their own magnetic charm.

The only two problems faced by Bahubali are its language and its stars. Originally produced in Telegu, the movies has been dubbed in several other languages including Hindi. Telegu is not known to every Indian and hence, many have to satisfy themselves with dubbed versions. There is absolutely no doubt that watching a movie in its native production language has its own appeal that dubbed versions lack. On the other hand, starrers Prabhas and Rana Daggubati are not very popular outside Andhra. This is precisely where Bajrangi Bhaijaan takes advantage.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan: This Bollywood piece on the other hand is not an epic mythological story. It is rather a telltale story that puts some imagination into use to promote India-Pak friendship which has been catalogued as a dream since 1942. Despite being a low budget movie, it has managed to set new records in box office collection. What really helped this movie? Here are three reasons:
- It capitalizes on the dream of friendship between India and Pakistan.
- It stars Salman Khan – a name and a face that is known to millions not just in India but also abroad.
- It is produced in Hindi – a language that more or less every Indian knows.
What are the disadvantages of the film? Not many except for occasional sprinkles of stupidity and absence of stunning visuals that movie-mad Indians and crazy Salman fans can happily ignore.
Box Office Collection
Bahubali made a record first-day collection worldwide, grossing at ₹60+ crores, followed by ₹52+ crores in second day and ₹57+crores in third to eventually close its first week of business at ₹255+ crores worldwide. By 9th day Bahubali grossed at ₹300 crore worldwide and ₹401 crore by 15th day! With these records, Bahubali became the first ever South Indian movie to hit ₹300 crores gross box office collection.
The problem was that all box office collections (both in India and abroad) for Bahubali were reported in gross. This means that even the entertainment taxes and distributors’ shares were accounted for. If the total net income of Bahubali is counted, the movie made ₹185 crores in its first week worldwide (as opposed to ₹255+ crores gross income).
Bajrangi Bhaijaan on the other hand beats Bahubali in first 5 days’ collection both in terms of gross and net collections. Bajrangi Bhaijaan minted ₹220 crores net income in first 5 days as opposed to Bahubali’s ₹213 crore gross income in first 5 days. Of the ₹220 crores earned by Salman’s movie, ₹151.05 crores came from domestic arena and remaining was swept from rest of the world.
It is true that Bajrangi Bhaijaan is beating Bahubali in terms of net collection both in domestic and international markets but there are a few notable achievements of Bahubali which are worth praising.
- Despite its not-so-popular starrers, the movie became the fastest movie in India cinema to hit ₹100 crores gross mark. It was achieved in just 2 days!
- The dubbed Hindi version of the movie made highest ever box office collection in history of Indian cinema, grossing at ₹85.71 crore so far.
- In Hindi dubbed category, it also became the highest grossing opening movie ever.
- It is also the highest opening Telegu movie, grossing at ₹27 crores on the opening day for the Telegu version.
- Bagging ₹28 crores in US box office, it also became the highest earning movie for third day opening. This record was previously held by PK of Aamir Khan.
Comparing Bahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan is not really fair because Bajrangi Bhaijaan enjoys the face of Salman Khan which alone is capable of propelling a movie to great heights. Also, regional movies and Bollywood Hindi movies have different entertainment tax rates. Hindi movies always suffer high entertainment taxes in other states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh etc. This is where Bahubali enjoyed benefits that Bajrangi Bhaijaan can only dream of. So, the overall comparison is not always balanced.
Irrespective of the advantages and disadvantages of both movies, they have definitely managed to set new records that will be difficult to beat. And with the sequel of Bahubali awaiting release in early 2016, Bahubali is yet to unleash its full potential. All we have to do is wait!
