Mr. Badruddin Tyabji : The first Muslim President of Indian National Congress (INC)
The first President of Indian National Congress (INC) with religious following of Islam was Mr. Badruddin Tyabji. He was also the person appointed as the President of the INC. His predecessor was Dadabhai Naoroji, i.e. he was the second person holding the post of President of INC. Badruddin Tyabji was also knows in the name of Tyab Ali. He was also a great freedom fighter and joined hands with Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters for attaining independence of India.
Presidential post of INC held by Badruddin Tyabji
Badruddin Tyabji was the first Muslim person appointed as the President in the INC after Naroji. He was given this responsibility in the 1887 session of INC. This session of INC was held in Madras. This session was the third session of INC after two years of its foundation. He was the part of the delegates in the first session of the INC that was held in the year of 1885, i.e. in its foundation year. But he missed the second session as he was suffering from illness.
Badruddin Tyabji’s biography
He was born in the year of 1844 in the city of Bombay. After having his higher studies in the field of law in London, England, he started working as a barrister. Bombay had its first barrister who was born in India. Soon he became a great public figure and then joined hands with A. O. Hume, the founder of INC and attended the first INC’s session in the year of 1885 along with his own brother Camruddin Tyabji. After having a bright career in Indian politics, he died in 1906 due to a major heart attack.
Badruddin Tyabji as a social reformer
He is not only a great freedom fighter or the first President of INC who is a Muslim, but also a great soul who wanted to bring social reforms in India, especially in Muslim community. He was against the culture of putting veil for women in Islam religion. That culture is called Purdah system. As he was very educated and had a proactive thinking, he considered that women should not hide themselves and come out and work and get education.
Badruddin Tyabji as one of the pillars of INC and Muslim community
From being the delegate member of the first session of INC in 1885 to holding the chair of President in the year 1887, Badruddin Tyabji has been one of the foundation pillars of INC. He was very courageous and forward minded. He brought the participation of Muslims in politics and administration in India. He wanted the Muslim community to get educated and come forward. He also sent his daughters for higher education in England. Thus in the process of nation making, one of the major forces was Badruddin Tyabji.
