Apply For National Insurance Number (NI)
NI is known as National insurance number which is given to all the people born or living in UK. However if you are not born there but are employed in the country or self employed, you are also supposed to have a NI Number. For all the people who are born in United Kingdom, they are given a unique number by the age of 16. Since this is a unique number it also serves the purpose of giving identity to all the residents of UK.
It is usually a set of two letters followed by 6 digits and then one letter at the end. The main purpose of a National Insurance number is to keep track of the national insurance contributions that you are liable to make every year in order to earn state benefits. Since it is a unique number given to every person earning money legally in UK, it is also your “Permanent Account number” It is also used to record all the tax that you pay each year. If you are not a citizen of UK, you would need to have a work permit of the UK government in order to get a National Insurance Number.
As per the laws of UK you are liable to pay National insurance if you are employed or self employed and your age is above 16. You can only stop paying it when you reach the age of state pension age as defined by UK
Once you have a national insurance number you are liable to pay national insurance only if you start earning a certain level of income. However with a NI you can voluntarily pay National Insurance every year even if you are not earning any money or if you want to fill the gap for the previous year in which you could not pay and want to enjoy certain state benefits or even if you are not living in United kingdom anymore but want to keep enjoying state benefits.
The process for applying online for National insurance depends on what you need it for. If you need it to work in UK you are supposed to call on certain number to fix up an interview and so on. Best advice would be to visit the HM Revenue and customs websites of UK government to identify the process regarding your case. However, be sure that you have certain documents before you apply for National Insurance Number.
- Passport ( Foreign or UK)
- National Identity Card
- Work Permit unless you are a citizen of UK or EEA citizen or a Swiss national
- Birth Certificate
- Driving license of UK or your own nationality
Once you have the document ready then you can give a call to Job centre plus on 0845 600 0643 between 9 am to 6pm Monday to Friday and appear for an interview with all the documents in original. Even if you don’t have certain documents, you can still appear the interview and try to convince them on whatever documents you have.
